Determination. ___________________________________________________________ “The climb begins.”
Twenty feet above ground, the hammer strikes the piton which drives it into the rock wall. The carabiner and rope are expertly attached to the protruding hole as the climber continues to work their way up the face of the mountain. While the footage plays. Alyssa Daniels steps into the frame, watching as the climber secures their position and continues to move.
“It begins for both of us, Jamie. It’s scariest in the beginning. I know you feel it too. When you heard your music hit and stepped out to see the screaming crowd, the nerves lit up big time. Things didn’t go your way, but that’s not the end. It’s not the extent of what you’re capable of. You were quite the successful collegiate wrestler after all. Your strength, technique, and leverage were impressive from what tapes I could get my hands on. But the nerves got you against Helena. I could tell. You were all jittery in your approach to the ring and even after the bell rang. Don’t let what happened at Frontline IV shake you, Jamie. You’ve got a long climb in front of you and it’s not how you start the climb, it’s how you finish it.”
As the last words slip from her lips, the climber slips, his feet and one hand losing grip on the rock wall. Alyssa winces as she looks back to the footage. The climber maintains a hold on a freshly planted piton and is able to regain footing and handholds. Alyssa speaks as she watches.
“We all slip from time to time. There’s no point in fearing it. It’s just part of the territory. You refocus, regain your grip, get your bearings, and keep climbing. This may be my first match but this business has been my life. I’ve studied it, emulated it, improved upon it, trained for it, witnessed it - a lot of it - and I’m certain you have all the talent necessary to carry gold one day. Your problem isn’t your ability, it’s up top in the ol’ noggin. You seem to doubt… I don’t know, yourself maybe? Your circumstances? You’re here, but not entirely. You want to succeed but you’re so afraid of failure, you just can’t get out of your own way. And I want you to. I want to face the talented Jamie Dorsey I’ve seen on film, not the frazzled Jamie Dorsey that got embarrassed in his first match with Elysium. I want the opportunity to counter your technique with quickness and a keen eye, counter your strength with speed, and best your leverage with flexibility. You will be my first practical application of all the hours of training and studying I’ve done. I may be inexperienced but trust me when I tell you that I am as prepared as one can possibly be. I’ve seen it all even if I haven’t been the one fighting. I’ve competed in my fair share of sports so I’m well aware of the pressure that comes with the territory.”
The climber reaches a ledge and pulls himself up. This isn’t the top of the mountain, not even close, but this provides him a reprieve where he can relax for a bit before continuing. Alyssa smiles without looking back at the screen.
“We’re going to climb together, Jamie.”
The footage fades, leaving Alyssa alone in the shot.
“Look, I’m not under any disillusions here: I know this business is as cutthroat as it gets. This isn’t a place where someone shows up, coasts through, and comes out the other side rich or a champion. You either work hard and stay employed, or you don’t and get the call that your contract has been terminated. And I don’t want that to happen to you, Jamie. Someone of your skill should be a contender but this opportunity isn’t going to wait here forever for you to grab it just because you’re capable of being great. You’re going to have to want it if you want to keep that six figure contract. I know what it’s like to expect greatness. I have high expectations for myself. I know my abilities. If I’m being completely honest, I know my privilege. I know that I’ve gotten where I am because I had a little bit of a head start compared to most rookies. But now, I have to capitalize on that. I can’t change the fact that I’ve had advantages, and neither can you. It’s our job to make them mean something, to not squander this opportunity! In a way, we’re responsible for doing something special with our opportunities. I expect nothing less from myself.”
Alyssa’s eyes narrow as she focuses in on the camera.
“It’s important for you to know, Jamie, that while I hope that you bring your best, I will not let up at all if you slack off or decide you don’t care enough to give your best effort. If I need to, I will finish you as quickly and decisively as Helena did. Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness, my size for frailty, or my compliments for intimidation. I know what my strengths are. I’m confident in my game plan and in the deviations that will occur depending upon the match situation. I’m ready for this. I’ve never been more ready. Are you?”
Alyssa begins to walk toward the camera, her demeanor calm, focused, and absolute.
“At Hallowed Ground, we’ll either climb together or you’ll take the fall. It’s your choice.”
The image of Alyssa’s face slowly fades to black.

Composure. ___________________________________________________________ “Take a deep breath.”
The waves crash against the California shoreline as the sun sets. The shore in this area has very little beach, more rocks and cliff faces. The sun sets across the Pacific Ocean to the west, creating a beautifully lit sky of pinks and yellows. The wind gusts intermittently, carrying the aroma of salt water to the nose. Alyssa sits high up on the edge of a rock, her hands out in a meditative gesture.
“Relax,” she says in a slow, dreamy tone.
Her eyes remain closed as her bright pink hair thrashes, trying to break free from the restraints of her hair tie. She inhales deeply, the sides of her mouth turning slightly upward at the pleasure of the air’s scent. She slowly opens her eyes, gazing out at the vast ocean before her. The smile reaches her eyes as she admires the scene.
“We’ve been working hard, Jamie, to get ready for Hallowed Ground. You’re a gym rat so there’s no reason to think you’ll be anything less than ready and I’ve spent a good amount of time training with Kevin Moss over in Big Bear Lake. Now, it’s time for you and I to relax, reflect on our work and progress over the past week and prepare mentally for the battle to come. We’re on the big stage come November 19th. We get the opportunity to open for Elysium’s biggest show yet! Do you get what that means, Jamie? You and I will set the tone for the rest of the night! When they look back, they’ll talk about that massive triple threat for the Elysium World Championship. They’ll talk about the Hybrid Championship match. They’ll be talking about whether or not Anthony Xavier was able to defend his Iron Championship yet again. You know what else they should be talking about?”
Alyssa closes her eyes, smile on her lips as she envisions her concept.
“Alyssa Daniels versus Jamie Dorsey.”
She opens her eyes and gazes serenely out at the ocean.
“We can make them discuss how this was where the ascension of our successful careers began. This night. This moment. They’ll point their fingers and say, ‘that’s where it all started.’ Months, maybe even years from now, there will be fans who will exclaim with pride, ‘I was there when Jamie Dorsey fought Alyssa Daniels!’ It’s our responsibility to kick this night off with a power versus speed classic. And that’s why we need to relax and focus.”
She furrows her brows as she focuses her thoughts.
“Despite the pressure on us to shine, we must keep our composure. We don’t need to overthink everything in that ring. We shouldn’t fight outside of ourselves and earn an early trip to the showers. We need to be ready to go the distance. I’ve been putting a little something extra into my cardio this week. I will not falter just because this match turns into a track meet. I know you like your lifting, Jamie, but you need to make sure you’re ready on all fronts. Plain and simple power does not win on its own. It needs an adequate gas tank to power it… Heh, ‘power’ it. Fun wordplay. I digress. All I’m trying to say, Jamie, is that I want you to be ready. I want you to be prepared. If I take you out quickly, that will reflect on me and my abilities both positively and negatively. If I don’t get much of a fight from you, I have no doubt that future opponents will question my ability to maintain the fight. Their doubts will turn to underestimation, I’ll beat them too, then they’ll have their excuses on hand. For both of our sakes, I need you to show up focused and with a fire in your belly.”
Alyssa grimaces slightly as she looks off into the distance.
“I can do this without you. After all, I’ve been doing all the talking for us this week. I just prefer not to. Hallowed Ground is almost here. Titles may be on the line, prides may clash to determine who’s superior, but this is our time! I plan on making the most of that, whether it takes fifteen minutes, a half hour, an hour, or five seconds. I’m bringing everything I have for this moment, Jamie. I hope you do the same. For now, though, it’s time to…”
Alyssa leans her head back slightly and takes a deep breath through her nose before breathing out her final word.
“Relax…”
The scene slowly fades with the sound of the final word mixed with the splashes of the crashing waves.
