Supernova. ___________________________________________________________ “Star light, star bright...”
The night sky is mostly clear. The dim light of dusk slowly does away with oranges and pinks, replacing them with strokes of black but, like glitter, the stars are coming out. One, presumably the north star, shines brighter than the rest. Alyssa Daniels, her magenta hair tied back in a short ponytail, wears a light jacket and jeans in the cool Arizona night. She stands in a hybrid field of sand and grass. Her eyes shine with the reflection of the star she continues to admire it.
“The first star I see tonight…”
She reaches out for the glimmering star.
“I wish we may, I wish we might…”
Her hand slowly falls as she looks upon the star burning ever brighter.
“Have our Starchild back tonight.”
Her eyes fall from the star and look down upon the sand-grass. She shakes her head in disappointment.
“They say that when you look upon a star, that star is dead, dark. The speed of light travels over such a distance that the star you see is actually from the past. And like us, all stars are mortal. They either supernova or fade away. And I knew, one day, it was going to come to this.”
Alyssa turns to face the camera, the starlight revealing her solemn expression.
“Elina Cartel, you are the reason I came to roam these Elysian Fields. I’m not here to pretend that’s a secret. I gushed about you when I got here and I’m not backtracking now. When I saw you glide around that ring? It was almost mesmerising to watch. It was an artform. I felt like, as I grew as a competitor, I could be like that one day. You were quick to stomp out the egos of your competition when they grew out of control. Now?”
Alyssa’s lip twitches in agitation.
“Now you choose to spend your time stroking them.”
Her shoulders heave as she takes a deep breath and looks off into the distance at nothing in particular.
“I learned that I couldn’t be like you. I learned that, while very similar in some respects, we’re very different in others. While you move artistically, I move efficiently. While you soar like an eagle, I soar for the impact.”
She nods as she ponders her assessment..
“And that’s not to mention your newfound bond with the very personification of evil. I won’t lie to you, Elina: part of me wonders what that concussion did to you. You traded in your starry sky for engulfing darkness. You traded everything that you are for power. Supporting an egomaniac and sacrificing your integrity was not a price too high for you to pay, was it? You are an amazing fighter, the likes of which we may never see again. Why would you throw away everything you are for nothing more than a handful of coattails?”
Alyssa waves a hand dismissively.
“And no, Elina, what I did was not the same. Kevin Moss and I joined forces because we saw the world in the same shades and tones. We found in one another a great love and respect for this sport. We wanted to preserve it. I still do. I sacrificed nothing to join forces with Kevin! He didn’t need my praise for validation. It’s actually pretty funny. Those who know they’re damn good at what they do need not preach about it. They don’t need to convince anyone. At one time, I think you realized that too. Now, you’re convinced that you can create a better Elysium, a better world, by hoarding power and protecting it like Golem.”
She looks at the camera and mouths the word, “Precious…”
“You stopped looking to the sky and instead you gaze upon the malicious glimmer in his eyes. You search for answers on a path where there are none and believe that just because you find them, they must not exist. Then you just make up answers yourself. You tell yourself the same sweet lies that he does, believing that you have any idea what a better Elysium truly is.”
She lets loose an involuntary growl as she finishes the statement. After a beat, she regains her composure and looks back to the bright star above, now brighter with the growing darkness.
“Tell me, Elina, how did it feel to hear him declare that he has no equal in this company since Kevin Moss is no longer with us? Act like he wasn’t talking about you if you prefer but you’re in this Summit Series to determine his opponent at Kingdom Come. That was announced well before he spoke. How can you be so proud and boast the way you do, the way you did against Azurine, when you know you’re just along for the ride? I know your skill. You seem to know it too. Yet you support someone who values you far less than you deserve.”
Alyssa shrugs.
“Or maybe that is what you deserve now.”
She bears her teeth as she refocuses.
“Don’t bother fashioning me into some kind of princess, statue, or whatever other condescending idea you dream up. I want you to see me as I am: someone who’s prepared, who comes to compete, someone who gets back up when knocked down, someone who will keep coming back at you no matter what you throw at her. I want you to remember how prepared I was for an opponent that made you struggle, and I want you to remember just how hard I kicked that door down. I will be prepared, Elina. When I bring everything to Frontline IX, know that I’m not just doing it for the Hybrid Championship. I’m not just doing it for Summit Series.”
Alyssa’s eybrows furrow.
“I’m doing this for you.”
The scene fades on the Heart of Infinity’s determined glare.

She was always a fan of professional wrestling. She watched as her father took the stage, absorb the limelight and became an invincible hero-her hero. She saw him beneath the lights and saw a god.
“The die hards and those willing to do their research know your family history well, Alyssa. However, I question whether or not you are fully aware of your family’s history. Outwardly, you represent this beaming and cheerful girl. You assume the role of the perpetual optimist and seem to always ‘keep moving forward’ as if you are channeling Rocky Balboa. This cheery optimism seems to be a great departure from the attitudes of the other two ‘Daniels Family’ members.”
“Introducing, the one, the only, KEITH DANIELS!”
She watched her father, with stars in her eyes. Inevitably she cast those same star filled eyes upon her uncle Seth as he ventured into the fray. She watched as they both climbed the ladder of success and hoped that same professional wrestling ability was written into her DNA.
“Yet, is this truly a departure? When Kevin Moss sadly perished, there was a moment where you showed your true colors, Alyssa. Were you were blinded to the presence of a camera or was it by design? Either way, you lashed out. The cheery and happy girl suddenly changed her face and her entire approach to professional wrestling and confessed that she hated her opponents and wanted to inflict pain upon them.”
“Yes, losing Moss was quite a blow, there is no denying this, the void created by his passing is wide and deep, however, your memoriam for him was to lose yourself and show your true colors. Your father and your uncle know hate all too well. Hate and arrogance fuels both of them. To be trite, are you a ‘chip off the ole block’?”
“Moments after you admitted your true heart and exposed your hatred, you managed to compose yourself, or were you simply putting your mask back on? You then had a long and heartfelt chat with your former tag team partner full of bravado and empty promises. I refrain from speculating to the thoughts of those who are no longer with us, but what must he think, now knowing that you are truly this hate filled little mongrel with pink hair and a push up bra?”
She didn’t see the wrestling acumen shared by her father and uncle in herself...yet. Perhaps it was because, at the time, the sport was dominated by male athletes. She hadn’t seen the world of female wrestling as it rose to prominence? Perhaps.
“On his way to the ring, YOUR DRUG OF CHOICE, SETH DANIELS!”
There were many things she didn’t see, however.
“Did it make you feel better to push out your hatred with tears? Somehow, did your tears wash away the guilt you carry with you every day when you hide the fact that yours is a truly black heart? Was your father proud of you when he saw you cry? Did he swallow hard, realizing that you could feel emotion in ways he never could? Perhaps he swelled with pride knowing that you, like him, can put on as effective a show as he can? You manipulate those around you with your sunny attitude and unassuming approach to this sport, but you have not disarmed me. I see you for who you truly are. You are yet another in a long line of insincere and insecure members of the Daniels’ family.”
“As an example, your father showed up intent on protecting his little girl, do you remember him saying that? Yes, I’m sure he would spit out vanilla language saying trite things like, ‘she can take care of herself’ and ‘she’s a big girl now’, but in reality, he demeans you with these statements. You’re still a ‘little girl’ and he needs to say the obvious, to somehow take ‘ownership’ over you and your minuscule amount of success. He’s no role model. He’s a manipulative shadow of his former self who takes responsibility for your actions, as if they were his own.”
“You must make your own way in this world, Alyssa. Be true to the monster you truly are.”
Keith, the proud father, was a known womanizer and misogynist. He was on the road more often than not and Alyssa found herself being raised by paid help. Keith, afterall, was more willing to ‘fuck’ someone’s mom, than he was willing to be Alyssa’s father.
Meanwhile, behind closed doors, Seth was injecting expensive poison into his veins. He was snorting, popping, smoking, and shooting his way to a better self. Or so he thought. His drug of choice was self-destruction.
“Your father and your uncle are not role-models. They are not to be ‘lived up to’. These two names are curses for you to wear like a scarlet letter. You are fighting from the bottom, trapped beneath the weight of these two men. Regardless of the steps you take to better yourself, they will both be there to silently remind you how they blessed you with a sullied name. You were better off on your own, when you were imitating me.”
Little Alyssa, hoping to make her way in the sport. Hoping to ‘live up’ to the Daniels name; while not realizing that she would have to live the name down.
“So focus on me like you focused on K-Remix. Just remember, there is more of ‘you’ in K-Remix than there will ever be in Elina Cartel. You are the ‘pretty girl’ who takes time to primp and look ‘perfect’. You are the girl drunk on hubris who passes it off as modesty. I suggest you show the world the real Alyssa Daniels. Go supernova. Shine bright and self absorbed, and ultimately burn out leaving only remnants in the impossible darkness.”
“And now, entering the ring next, is THE HEART OF INFINITY, ALYSSA DANIELS!” END

Evil Within. ___________________________________________________________ Alyssa stood there in front of the mirror wearing a sleeveless black shirt and jeans. She examined her own reflection. She could see her resemblances to her family as she looked. Maybe the eyes a bit? Maybe the smile? As she thought, she absentmindedly lifted her hand and pressed her fingers to her chest. The pressure caught her attention and she looked down at her hand. She smiled to herself and closed her eyes.
“That’s the difference.”
“It doesn’t have to be.”
Alyssa’s eyes flew open and she looked back into the mirror. Though the reflection still resembled her, there were very notable differences. Rather than having shoulder length magenta hair, the reflection had a shorter cut and flame red hair. The reflection gave Alyssa a devious grin.
“You know who you really are.”
Alyssa took a step back from the mirror. The reflection, following her body movements, did the same. The reflections eyes gleamed with malice.
“You know that she’s right.”
Alyssa glared defiantly at her reflection.
“No.”
The red-haired reflection cackled in laughter.
“If only your convictions were as strong as you make them seem.”
“You know nothing of my convictions!”
“Sweetheart, I am you. I know it all.”
“Just difficulty understanding it then?”
“Ooh,” the reflection mocked. “The little girl snaps when she’s cornered. See? It’s totally there. Maybe you just have to be desperate first.”
“That’s not how that works…”
“You know what you want. Why not just take it? Do what it takes this week to leave little Elina in a pool of her own blood and take that Hybrid Championship as your trophy. Use SHIDO’s underling, and the other two bitches, to send him a message that you’re coming to destroy him.”
Alyssa lifted her hand to rub her face. The reflection did not.
“No… That’s not right…”
“Right, wrong... both are nonsense! All that matters is power: those who have it, and those who do not. No one takes you seriously because you don’t have power. You need to rip it from their cold, dead hands. It’s what Dad would’ve done.”
“No… No, he wouldn’t--”
“Wouldn’t have done that? Don’t be naive, girl! Your father would destroy anyone, save maybe you, to gain power. Don’t you remember when he pushed drugs onto his best friend’s son just to rip away his World Championship? How about his trip to the graveyard to dig up--”
“Stop!”
The room appeared to quake at the scream. The reflection looked surprised but pressed on anyway.
“You’re a Daniels, girl. You need to embrace what that means. We take what we desire by any means necessary. This ‘good girl’ act of yours cannot last.”
“It’s not an act!”
With that, Alyssa hammered her fist into the mirror. The glass shattered and the reflection screamed in agony. The shards spilled to the floor in a loud clatter as Alyssa clutched her hand. Her knuckles began to drip blood. She leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes.
“The battle never ends. Inside us all lives an evil, a lazy, poisonous, destructive evil. I’m no exception. It comes back every day whispering in my ear about shortcuts I could take, damage I could cause, and even louder about the truth of who I am.”
Alyssa takes a deep breath and opens her eyes. They definitely appeared to be shinier than they had been a few seconds ago.
“I am a Daniels.”
She barked out a short laugh.
“That means... What? We’re not some evil empire just waiting to happen. As it relates to the evil within, we’re not special or unique. Uncle Seth’s been around for a decade, Dad’s been around for two. It’s easy to look back at their struggles over the years and trivialize it for five minutes.”
Alyssa smirked.
“The lazy destroyer.”
She stepped away from the wall, confidence in her posture now.
“Yes, they have struggled. They struggled the way you struggle, Elina, the way I will struggle. Are they perfect? No way. They’ve made mistakes. I’ve made mistakes. Even you have made mistakes, Elina. We’ll make more. But I still choose to fight that evil where they, and now you, welcomed it like an old friend.”
Beat.
“And you’re right, Starchild, they’re not role models. Why do you follow their example?”
Alyssa shook her head.
“After all, you mimic them more than I. You spend your time these days belittling your opponent and convincing the world they are not worthy of your time. Seldom do you acknowledge your opponents’ strengths. After setting yourself so far beyond Azurine Vebbins, after trying to convince everyone that she was mentally ill, you were just barely able to escape with your Hybrid Championship. Instead of decisively beating her - melting her into a puddle was the metaphor I believe you used - you were happy to accept the count-out. You were very beaten up yourself after all. Don’t you see your principle failings? Think about it, if Azurine beats you then, at best, your words lack credibility. At worst, you appear weak. By tearing everyone else down, you discredit yourself. Your victories mean nothing and your losses are incredibly damaging.”
Before continuing, she grabbed a nearby towel and used it to wipe away some of the blood.
“Don’t make that mistake with me. You are incredibly talented, a fact I will never deny, but I can beat you. If you fail to acknowledge the challenge you face, if you decide to belittle me and banish me to irrelevance, my victory might destroy you.”
Alyssa moved the towel to inspect the cuts on her fist.
“My plan is only to defeat you. Please don’t make me bury you in these Elysian fields.”
She tossed the bloody towel onto the glass shards and walked away.

Alone in a dark room, she waited. The only light was the glow of her smartphone screen as it dimly illuminated her face. Her eyes were fixed on the screen as her finger scrolled to a tweet revealing that Elina Cartel had returned to Elysium.
She smiled and clicked ‘like’.
“I’ve known for some time now that you have idolized me. It was never a secret. If I were in my right mind, I would be flattered. It would not build ego, but it would encourage the need to empathize. We all have heroes, Alyssa. We all have idols we look to when we are ‘down’ and in need of inspiration. Some call to gods. Some call to the earth. Some...call to the stars. You, without your precious mirror, call to the Starchild.”
She resized the picture of Elina and imagined standing beside her. Imagined the life she could lead, united with this woman. She liked, retweeted, and subtweeted.
Sweat grew across her brow as she found Elina’s instagram and soon she had seen everything Elina’s camera had seen, as if she had been there. She could close her eyes and see herself with Elina, talking to her, existing with her.
She smiled.
“I read you correctly, Alyssa. I believed it to be a haphazard diagnosis at the time, as it was just short of ‘throwing a dart at a collection of ideas’, but I hit the target, didn’t I? All I had to do was call your family name into question and you promptly fell into an existential crisis. Yes, yours is a beautiful crisis complete with theatrics and camera tricks. You made me smile with that. Your imagination and vigor are refreshing. Compared to every single opponent I have faced within these Elysian Fields, you have proven to be the very finest. Yet, you are a child, aren’t you?”
“I don’t know your father or your uncle, nor do I want to. I’m sure they’re lovely in their own ways, but you missed the point my dear. It was never ‘whether or not you were a true Daniels’ it was whether or not you could be controlled. Alyssa, my beautiful marionette.”
Still alone in the dark room, she pondered her future. She adopted Elina’s words, her moves, and her style. She wanted to see the world through Elina’s eyes.
“I say ‘jump’ and you look to impress with ‘how high’ you can soar in response. I know, just as well as you do, that we are not those who came before us. Many things are written into our DNA, but our responses to stimuli are not decided at the molecular level. No. Humans can control, or learn to control, their responses to anything. A trained mind is a greater weapon than any fist, regardless of the rigidity of the mirror one strikes. You, however, are so quick to ‘prove’ you are not who I claim you to be, by putting on a specific display to attest to the fact. You suggest that my words could lack credibility, but your words? Your words are a direct response to mine. Your words have hidden meanings which speak volumes: You’re insecure, vulnerable, and find yourself in a desperate position--face to face with your idol.”
She showed a toothy grin when Elina referred to herself as ‘Elina Stardust’.
She wanted more.
Follow. Like. Snap. Heart. Thumbs up. Pin.
“I would suggest you worry less about the future of my career and how I face adversity. Focus on your own, my darling puppet. It took you destroying a mirror to convince yourself that you could even compete with me. Why? You were dealing with the mere words I directed towards you. Who has truly won? If my words could bring you to the point of duplicitous self-destruction, imagine what will happen when the two of us share the same space.”
She listened to Elina’s music. Adapted Elina’s taste in clothing. She ate at the same restaurants. She ordered the same espresso. Even tried smoking the same brand of cigarettes.
Everything Elina Stardust.
“You have so much talent within you Alyssa, but it’s unbridled and misunderstood. You lack the right sculptor to remove the rough edges from what, in you, could be a work of art. You are in danger without proper guidance.”
“With all of the imagination, skill, and flair for theatrics you possess, you still lack focus. You may think that lashing out against imaginary and inanimate objects may somehow prepare yourself for a match, but this is the logic of an immature girl still searching for identity.”
“You should have asked your idol for help before making an hollow promise to defeat her.”
All alone in the dark room, her cheeks streaked with mascara encouraged to run by tears, she saw Elina as an enemy. She saw her as a roadblock. She realized that she hated her. She cried. She saw her own reflection in the phone for a moment. Her red hair infuriated her.
She slammed the phone onto the ground and punched it with all of her might, shattering it. She pulled back a bloody fist.
“You can’t 'have back’ the Starchild you never truly knew. We all evolve and like you said, we all go through ‘struggles’. If you think I have not felt this, then you truly believe me to be a god, my dear. I cannot be your Starchild, nor your subjective idea of who Elina Stardust really is, but I will make one thing perfectly clear: I am not Keith, Seth, or Alyssa Daniels. I am your opponent, like it or not, and at Frontline, you will feel the heat of a star going Supernova.”
She cried. She screamed. She panicked. She mourned her broken heart.
“You asked for this.”
She told herself, “Alyssa, bury Elina Stardust in the Elysian Fields.”
