The start of the video came with the camera chasing darkness. As the camera panned around, a single light grazed the lens. It wasn’t a heavenly gleam coming down on the miserable statues inside of SHIDO’s realm. Instead, it was the illumination of a locker room. As the operator crept in, the back of the Elysium World Champion sat there with no shirt on. All across his back, there were scars, things that were unseen to the wrestling world. As the camera drew closer, the room slowly went grayscale. With nothing but the silence of reality, SHIDO sat, looking down at the desk of a vanity mirror. He sniffled, drawing his hand underneath his nose. The view came closer, revealing the Elysium World Championship sat on the desk near him with his nameplate striking at the camera, a reminder of who the champion was and had been for some time now.
“Soon comes the day where Elysium Pro will come into a new era,” he began, his voice void of the theatric tone he usually carried, “when people throw around that phrase, people think it means that everything will change. In a sense, that will be true."
“But not in the way that everyone wants it to be.”
“Spoiler: I’m still going to be the Elysium World Champion.”
“Everyone in this tournament, the nine wannabe usurpers wanting to be the future of the company now that everything’s back with a new polish,” SHIDO flexed his jaw, “I don’t believe in that nonsense. I’m offended by it even. Everyone has some way to discredit or undermine everything I've done in Elysium and my career. When Young wants to compare her championship reign to me, she does just that. She runs that ‘best champion’ thing because she did what a champion’s supposed to and defend her belt and couldn't get my World Championship. Nemesis and DEIMOS still can’t come to terms with the fact that I had the Leader of Salvation beat dead to rights. We got others saying that I’m a bad champion or whatever lie that they have to make up because of one fact.”
“This championship sitting right here is mine and I’ve defined it each time I’ve competed.”
“Where’s Holland at? Where’s Mathis? They both know better than to try to challenge me again. Both of them stood up to me, believing that I was just a pretty boy and not the dangerous son of a bitch I really am. When it was time to put up or shut up, I didn’t give them an option. No one who has ever stepped in the ring with me has been able to put me down or change my course. No matter the match type or what the stakes were, I’ve come out on top and stayed on top.”
“Now I’m back here in the place I’ve made, in the place that I’ve called my home. I bleed Elysium more than anyone else in the world. I’m the World Champion of the company. I am the Ruler of this Kingdom. I’m the God of these Fields. SHIDO is Elysium, and no one can say the same,” SHIDO’s intense gaze fixated on the mirror before him, “not Young, not Daniels, not Cartel, and not even if Holland brought his broken ass back.”
“If I waged war and destroyed lives to win the championship, what makes anyone think I can't do it all over again? People want to think that I haven’t changed in our absence,” SHIDO scoffed, “I’ve spent all this time away with the championship in my hands. I’ve grown attached. It’s like my child. The gold’s a part of me like the heart that beats in my chest.”
“I’m still hungry. I’m worse than ever before because I’ve grown so used to holding this championship and being the best champion in the whole damn world,” the corners of his mouth twinged, “and I’m the animal backed into the corner, protecting everything that made him what he is today.”
“Elysium in the past was a monarchy. We had people that could challenge for the throne or rule their own nation. We had contenders and great champions, but everyone knew there was one ruler. Then the kingdom burned to the ground,” SHIDO reached into his pocket absently, pulling out a book of matches to rest on the table. “Now something new rises from the ashes. It’s a blank slate and people want to make the throne theirs. They can try. What everyone in this tournament doesn’t understand is that when I became the King of the Fucking World, I changed the game. I killed the last king and put his head on a pike. I made those under me dance like the jesters they are. That was how I wanted my Elysium to run.”
“With this one now, where we have rebels and fools coming for what I’ve worked for,” SHIDO gritted his teeth.
“They want to take what I’ve bled for?”
“What I’ve killed for?!”
SHIDO grabbed his championship off the table, slinging it roughly over his shoulder. His reflection was the picture image of a madman lost in his righteous anger. He took a match out of its box, dumping the rest onto the table. Striking the match was easy enough and setting the rest of the book ablaze was even easier. As the flames began to cultivate, SHIDO stepped back. An eerie grin crawled onto his features, the devil’s smile that the Elysian Fields had not seen in a long time.
“Elysium used to be a kingdom, but it’s a new era like everyone says.”
SHIDO was at peace, even as the flames threatened to engulf him too.
“Elysium’s a dictatorship now.”
“And I’m killing all the traitors.”
