There’s the scratch of a needle hitting a record--moments pass until there’s a crackle and Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” begins to play. Lights come up enough to just faintly light up the record player just as Elina's hand reaches for the needle and pulls it up from the record, silencing it. “You’re just too good to be true, Ashe Corvin. Take yourself back to when you faced K-Remix at Wideawake, you were too good to be true, then. Back then it ‘wasn’t your first one night tournament’. Remember saying that? Oh yes, you said that and proclaimed that you were ‘the best there is at this’. You said you would win the night, take the title, and ‘raise its standards’.”A soft chuckle escapes her lips. “Back then it was all on you to make the title sought after. To take it to a ‘new’ level. Allow your mind to travel back to that moment--those words. Go ahead. You said ‘only the worthy may pass’; that you were the gatekeeper. ‘Their King’; ‘Their God’, and that they would all ‘bow before you’.”Elina places the needle back down just in time to hear Frankie Valli say, “Baby, you’re just too good to be true” before pulling the needle back up again. “K-Remix was too ‘green’ or inexperienced to face a veteran like you. His losing to you would be ‘inevitable’ and he should have just accepted it, that’s what you said, right? In a manner of words, you did.”
“Only moments later, looked past him. You looked onto the others involved in this ‘one night tournament’ and judged each and every one of them ‘inferior’. Too good to be true, Mr. Corvin. As soon as the moment came for you to prove your words, you found yourself on your back at the hands of K-Remix and you didn’t even have an opportunity to face those you had already deemed inferior. How did this happen?”Over her shoulder, a screen lights up long enough to show K-Remix planting Corvin with the ‘ Zero Chill’ finishing maneuver. “How is it possible that the man who declared himself the ‘only true king in Elysium’ didn’t make it past the first round?”She refrains from showing what would be a toothy smile. “Mr. Corvin, you were apparently rendered unable to look past the aura you’ve imagined for yourself. You weren’t defeated by K-Remix, no. You lost that battle long after you had already flown the white flag of surrender. How? You surrendered for your lust for yourself. You imagine yourself this invulnerable god and you make the assumption that those before you will heed this and play the part of the ‘victim’. Perhaps, within a vacuum, your taunts and pseudo-intimidation have meaning, but when exposed to reality, they dwindle and take form as the residue of a man who may have, at one point, had meaning.”
“This is possibly an issue many have when entering Elysium. FM Young and Anthony Xavier both believed their pasts and personal prowess would carry them through the triple threat at Frontline and both were ‘shocked’ when this ‘performance artist’ defeated them. You did the same with K-Remix. You assumed that your past victories and accomplishments would enter the ring with you and do your fighting for you. You never stopped to really look at who you were facing.”Elina drops the needle again as Frankie sings, “Pardon the way that I stare...There's nothing else to compare…” She pulls the needle up again. “I urge you to abandon your present guise of invulnerability and accept that you are at the same level as everyone else.”Over her shoulder, there’s a flash of an image of the Hybrid Championship Belt. “Now you can’t take your eyes of the Hybrid Championship. The Hybrid Championship will be decided at Frontline 2 and I can only assume you already have designs on it. You have already imagined yourself wearing it, haven’t you? Inevitably, You will spew forth more rhetoric--claiming the Championship already belongs to you. You can’t help it, can you? Regardless of what you may say next, you believe this Championship is owed to you. In the same way you believed you would run the table at Wideawake, you believe firmly, that you are owed.”Again she drops the needle as Frankie says, “Can’t take my eyes off of you,” before lifting the needle again. “You’ve already mentioned your relationship with Godless. Do you feel like he’s in your debt? Are you preparing for him to walk out to the ring, declare you the winner, and then hold a ticker-tape parade in your honor? Is this your expectation or is it not outrageous enough?”“Me? Again, I’m no one. I came to these Elysian Fields to start again--like many others. These Elysian Fields which you simply don’t understand. ‘Just like the Elysium from the tales’ where ‘the fresh heroes’ to battle? No. The Elysian Fields are the afterlife, Mr. Corvin. While I do not want to educate you on Greek mythology, still, it begs mentioning that here in this ‘afterlife’ we have all been given an opportunity to start again. Furthermore, everything done previously is absolutely meaningless. Your name holds no more meaning than my own.”
“I will not be stepping into the ring with a God, King, or any other of the varied labels you apply to yourself. No. I will be stepping into the ring with an overconfident man who believes previous accolades have meaning in this--our new world--Elysium.”
“While you depend on your past to shape your present--you grant me the right to decide your future.”Elina drops the needle one last time as the lighting drops to black, as it fades out, you can hear Frankie sing, “You're just too good to be true...I can't take my eyes off you…” END

I’m no longer the type to come out after a win and say I told you so. That is for the kids still working their way up. The ones trying to etch their names into the annals of history.
So, Cage, I will ask you this. How did it feel realizing everything you’ve heard was true? It had to have stung a little bit right? You tried so hard to beat me only to fail. You went to the well one too many times and paid for it. You lost to one of the oldest tricks in the book.
So much for being two steps ahead huh?
The war has officially started between us. First battle goes to Corvin. Remember that this is a war, one you wanted. Try and remember how I wage war. Remember what I have done to family who thought to usurp me.
But you are not my focus at this point in time. No, doing what I said and beating you has given me the opportunity to become a champion here in Elysium. A chance I had taken away by you was given back to me, by you. So here I am, facing off against Elina Cartel.
As Kelly said, this is a battle of the generations. The old versus the new. I can only feel that Kelly’s sense of poetic irony is why he made this match. Sure we both won our respective matches on the first ever Frontline. But I’ve known Kelly a while and this reeks of his twisted ideas. I would even go so far as to say that I have been in a similar situation, old against new. Albeit I was on the opposite side of the fight that time. Wasn’t I Kelly?
But I am getting sidetracked. Elina, I will say that I was actually impressed by your performance at Frontline. You are a fitting choice for a possible inaugural Hybrid Champion. Your style is somewhat unique. Well, it would be totally unique for just about everyone. But I’m not everyone. My brother, Eric, has a style akin to yours. I would love to see a match between the two of you, see who has the better striking.
That means, Elina, that your style really isn’t gonna be as much of an advantage as you were probably hoping. You see, that is part of my advantage. I have the experience, the knowledge, of what to expect. I will come out here and call you every euphemism I know for trash but I will never underestimate you. Where the lessers that you faced off against last time didn’t know how to react to you, I will. It will take me far less time to adapt to you, my little star child.
Don’t think your little titles and history have gone unnoticed. A little shift in attitude, Elina, and you could be just like me. I can take your spark and your thirst for knowledge and give you the world. I could lift you up and have you tower over the Universe. Just come into the fold, little star child. Let the cool, comforting embrace of the dark encompass you. Come to my side, little star child, be my princess. I will build you a kingdom so grand that God will grow jealous. Let me groom you. Let me shape your raw material into greatness.
Elina, little star child, if you do not accept my offer. And it is a fairly generous one at that. But if you refuse this offer I will have no option than to make an example out of you. My benevolence is grand, but my retribution is swift. Snub me and I shall break you down. Deny me and I will destroy you. You might fancy yourself a star child, but a star can be devoured by the darkness. A star, caught too close to a black hole, slowly gets ripped apart.
I will be the black hole that devours you, Elina. Reject my offer and watch as I slowly and methodically pull you apart.
You have plenty of my history to watch in preparation, Elina. You can see how my style has adapted and evolved over my career. But you have yet to see what it currently is now. The Hybrid Title is touted as being one of a blend of styles. You have to be prepared for any and everything while holding this belt. It will take more than just a mix of a couple of styles. Sure you have an overall good base, with focus on a few aspects. But look at me. Where do I sit? Where is the King of Darkness’ base sit?
It sits at an overall higher level than yours. No real major areas stand out. Sure there are some spots better than others, but its small hills and valleys. Not plains and vast mountain peaks. I am a living, breathing, hybrid of styles. There isn’t any aspect of this business I can’t adapt to. The Hybrid title is basically designed for me.
Soon you shall see what experience can do to someone in the ring. The rookies, and rookies they are compared to me, are all the same. Young, dumb, and lucky. But us old dogs? We have our own tricks. We have ones that some of you haven’t seen before. But it’s alright, my little star child. I will show you just how great you could have been. Then after I get my title, I might extend the offer again.
Maybe.
Until next time, my little star child.

My sweet little Star Child.
It warms the cockles of my heart that you are so, focused, on me. Do not think the subtlety of song choice was lost on me, darling. The obvious meaning of focus was well done. I applaud you for that one dear. You truly are a woman after my own heart.
There are a million other song choices out there that you could have gone with. But you chose that specific one. The one that is most often recognized as a love song. That leads me to believe that maybe my offer might not fall upon deaf ears. Will my little Star Child come into the fold?
Despite your big focus on, focus, you seemed to have missed a few little details, didn’t you, dear? You tried to twist the facts to fit your little narrative. You wanted to say that my “lust for myself,” my pride, was the reason I lost that match at Wideawake. But we both know that isn’t the truth, don’t we? I lost that match because of someone else, not myself.
A ghost from my past decided to show up and become a thorn in my side. I’m not one to play the what ifs or what could have been. We won’t know how that match would have ended. Had said ghost not appeared we might not even be facing each other this show. But that is in the realm of what if, and remember, we don’t play there.
So here we are, little Star Child. Our paths are on a collision course. The moment of impact drawing ever closer. The child of the cosmos and the Darkness. It’s almost poetic really. The two of us meeting like this. Who will prevail? Will it be the radiant new star? Or will the Darkness, the old tiger, come out victorious?
You see, Elina, despite all of your bravado about Elysium you, again, miss some points. In your tale of the Elysium fields of mythology you skip over the small little fact that it is not just the afterlife, but, in essence, heaven. Paradise. Therefore, by that logic, you realize that your past has total meaning on you being there. You deserve to be there. Your deeds before bought you entrance.
Where you see just a simple braggart there is just a man looking for a challenge. You see they always you need to know your enemy. You need to think like them. Predict what they will do or say. That’s all I am helping any of you do. I spout off my laurels so that any who get into that ring with me know what they are doing. I want them prepared. I want them to be ready. I welcome the challenge that a prepared enemy offers.
It feeds me. It shows that when I win, that I am a sum of my past achievements. That not one of them stands out from the whole. Everything I have done has made me who I am. You want to know me? Know what I have done. Study my titles and accolades. Learn of what it took for me to get them. To hold on to them as long as I did. It will tell you my story.
So, no, little Star Child, you have no say in my future. You can think you do. You can even claim it if you happen to beat me. But win or lose, there is more beyond you. You are a cross road on my path to that future. Both lead to it, It has yet to be decided which road I shall embark upon. So, at the very best, Elina, you are an obstacle in my path. Nothing more.
I expect nothing from Kelly, Elina. The only reason I have ever brought our past up is to prove that he brought me here for a reason. He knows exactly what I am capable of. What I bring to a company. The last thing I would want would be for him to just hand me a title. If he wants me to have one he will give me the chance to prove not only himself right, but to everyone else what I can do. Who was his first choice for the match to decide his company’s secondary title?
Me.
He knows what happens when there is gold around my waist. When I earn this belt, beating someone else he feels deserves it, it will be the start of an era. Go study my past, Star Child, and you will see that I can and have set records with titles. I have carried them up to standards no one else can match. I will do that with the Hybrid title. And I have to thank you for being in the match that I win it in.
Beating someone like you will be the perfect start to the long reign of the Kind of Darkness. All started as the darkness engulfs and suffocates the bright star. Are you ready, little Star Child? Have you studied enough? Have you read the stars, and sought meaning from them? Have you see the real future, or just the one you want?
Frontline shall be the Endline for you, Elina. I would apologize but we both know that I wouldn’t really mean it. So, I will say, please don’t disappoint me, little Star Child. Bring all of your shine and gusto. Let my darkness erode it away. Piece by piece I shall devour your essence. Then it will happen. That is when…
Darkness shall reign.

Flash to an art gallery where we see Elina Cartel just dimly lit. “Welcome to the Boston University Art Gallery. Tonight, they have obliged me, by hosting an exhibit of my own. One dedicated to my opponent, Ashe Corvin.”Elina approaches the first painting which is lit up, displaying a painting of Corvin in full Nazi regalia. “Mr. Corvin, I see you are welcoming the fact that the Nazis are once again en vogue. How exciting for you. The ‘Alt Right’ as they call themselves have made quite a splash in recent months, believing they have been granted a voice by our current President.”
“Politics aside, is this your goal? Do you feel like Himmler, Göring, or even Hitler? Does it make you feel powerful? It does, doesn’t it?”
“Yet, you aren’t part of any kind of a movement, are you? Your choice to dawn this uniform was informed by the simple fact that you thought it ‘looked cool’. You are incredibly shallow, Mr. Corvin.”Elina steps up to the next painting which is suddenly lit, displaying a painted portrait of Ashe Corvin and Elina Cartel on their ‘wedding day’. “Yes, your advances towards me have not gone unnoticed, no matter how condescending they clearly are. If you had paid attention to my last match, you would know that I am not interested in being objectified or treated differently due to my gender. Seemingly, you don’t pay attention. Very well. I must ask, however, what did you think would be gained from approaching me this way? Were you expecting me to rush to you with stars in my eyes? Did you really believe your awkward advances would be considered charming?”
“Furthermore, is it your intention to sully the Hybrid Championship while it is still in its infancy by turning this match into an episode of ‘The Bachelor’? I for one, intend on embracing and honoring the Hybrid Championship. Win or lose, I will not embarrass Elysium by turning this Hybrid Championship match opportunity into my own personal dating service. Keep your advances in a special place. For one day, someone as vapid as you are will appear and wish to be your ‘star child’.”Elina strolls to the next painting which is lit, displaying a painting of Ashe Corvin naked, trapped within a fish bowl. His hands are pressed up against the glass and his eyes are wide and terrified. “You have proven yourself to be an ignorant man trapped within a fishbowl. You couldn’t take responsibility for your loss against K-Remix--in fact you seem to think the decision was up to someone else. Fine. I’m sure this ‘thorn in your side’ was unavoidable, but still, if you were as great as you claim to be, you would have been prepared. You would have seen him coming. Yet, this isn’t the case is it, but it is immaterial, because it wasn’t your fault, was it? Just like so many things before, and soon approaching, it will not be your ‘fault’. You run from responsibility. You were carted into Elysium safe within your fishbowl of ignorance and you are unprepared to face what lies beyond those thin glass walls. Soon, you will learn that there are harsh realities waiting for you.”Elina continues walking and stops at the next painting. It’s lit up and this time it shows a painting of the album cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” “At this point, I must thank you, Mr. Corvin. When I first envisioned using this song in regards to you, I was curious if you would even recognize it. You did, so kudos on that accomplishment. I then fully expected you to go on and on about the song itself. I expected you to take this as an advance towards you. I expected that you would simply listen to the song and would not understand the meeting I injected into it. I am so pleased you took the bait and proved yourself to be the rube I expected you to be.”
“You see, this was not a romantic gesture. This gesture was simply to relate to you the fact that I will be keeping my eyes on you. You are an open book of painfully unimaginative ideas and bland predictability. This will not assist you when the bell rings and you find yourself eye to eye with me. You would first have to mature for my interest to turn anywhere near considering you a peer, let alone a suitable mate.”Elina laughs softly as she moves forward to the next painting which lights up to show a painting of Ashe Corvin as a baby in a diaper. “You blindly believe that this match is all about you. You believe yourself ‘more than’ prepared for me and seem to act as if this match has already happened. Yes, my focus has been on you, as it should, but have you noticed that I have not needed to boast my own prowess? You should consider taking notes. I do not have to bluster at length about ‘how good’ I am, because I choose to make that statement with action in the ring.”
“You insist upon bring up your prowess while you sing your own praises for two reasons: One, no one else will. Two, you are absolutely insecure.”
“You are a ‘veteran’ to this sport who has the maturity of a thirteen year old. You believe if you are ‘dark’ and wear Nazi regalia that you will be ‘intimidating’. All of this is ‘show’ just like your words. They are as meaningless as everything else which spews forth from your insipid mouth.”She steps forward and the final painting, of the Hybrid Championship over Elina Cartel’s shoulder is revealed. “All that matters now is ensuring that the Hybrid Championship is not sullied by a man the likes of Ashe Corvin.”End.
